Marriage is a sacred and holy event in the eyes of God. It is a covenant between a man and a woman, blessed by God, and meant to last a lifetime. The Bible teaches us that marriage is a reflection of the relationship between Christ and His church.
In Genesis 2:24, we read, "Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh." This verse teaches us that marriage is more than just a physical union between a man and a woman. It is a spiritual union that brings two people together as one.
God's Blessing on Marriage
God blesses marriage and desires for it to be a lifelong commitment. In Malachi 2:16, we read, "For the Lord, the God of Israel, says that he hates divorce." Divorce was never part of God's plan for marriage. Instead, He desires for couples to work through their differences and remain committed to one another.
In Ephesians 5:25, we read, "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her." This verse teaches us that husbands are called to sacrificially love their wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her. This means that husbands are called to put their wives' needs before their own and to love them unconditionally.
Roles of Wife and Husband
In Ephesians 5:22-24, we read, "Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands." This verse teaches us that wives are called to submit to their husbands and to respect them as the head of the household.
In Ephesians 5:28-29, we read, "In the same way, husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church." This verse teaches us that husbands are called to love their wives as they love themselves and to care for them as they care for their own bodies.
Conclusion
Marriage is a sacred and holy event that is blessed by God. It is a reflection of the relationship between Christ and His church and is meant to last a lifetime. Husbands are called to sacrificially love their wives, and wives are called to submit to their husbands and respect them as the head of the household. Let us strive to honor God in our marriages and to love and care for our spouses as Christ loves and cares for us.
